Drug testing – the beginning |
|
Federally regulated drug testing started in 1989 when the Department of Transportation put into place its drug and alcohol testing program for covered workers. At the start of the DOT regulated drug testing program, 18 % of American truck drivers drug tested positive, with cocaine, marijuana or amphetamines in their urine.
Since then with implementation of strict regulations the rate of positive drug tests has gone down tremendously. In 1998, 5% of pre employment drug tests were positive for illicit drugs, and for those employees in random drug testing programs, the positive drug test rate was less than 2%. In the FAA program, the positive drug test rate fell to less than 1%.
Following in the DOT initiatives, Norton Medical Industries has committed itself to ensuring a drug free environment for all industries and workplaces. |

Drug usage in workplaces
|
|
|
Drug usage in workplaces can result in serious losses for the employer. Not only loss of productivity but the danger posed to other employees can be quite high. In addition it could also affect the morale and motivation levels of employees resulting in not just immediate loss in revenues but also prove to have long term repercussions.
Many employers are now actively implementing drug testing programs to counter risks as well as provide a safe, sound and a healthy working environment.

Urine Drug Testing
|
|
At Norton medical we use legal tests approved by federal agencies such as Department of Transportation (DOT), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and Federal Transit Administration (FTA).
- Norton medical performs urine drug tests with initial antibody screening and confirmation of positive using gas chromatography mass spectrometry.
- These urine drug tests are evidential tests supportable in courts of law.
- The laboratories testify to the accuracy of the testing. The laboratories that perform these tests are SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) approved.
- Norton Medical laboratories are inspected and certified by the federal government to do testing for federally regulated companies.
- At Norton medical these tests do not cost more than rapid antibody pee in a cup tests.
- Standard urine drug testing panels range from five to 10 drugs.
- At Norton Medical specimen validity testing is done routinely to detect adulterants or specimen substitution resulting from a donor's attempts to mask drug use.
- The results, either positive or negative, return the next working morning in most cases and are reported on the internet the next morning.
- Norton Medical SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration http://www.samhsa.gov) certified laboratories conduct urine drug analyses in accordance with DHHS and DOT requirements.
- Testing of non-regulated specimens is conducted using the same stringent protocols.
